What is a multimeter
Since I fell in love with electronics, I always needed my multimeter because it helps me in so many ways. When you’re passionate about electronics, a good multimeter becomes essential. From measuring voltage and current to checking continuity and resistance, the multimeter is like a trusted companion for every electronics enthusiast. So in this article, I’ll explain everything you need to know about a multimeter and its uses.
What is a multimeter?
A multimeter is an electronic tool used to measure different electrical properties of components or circuits. It can measure things like voltage, current, and resistance all in one device. It consist of a display screen to show measurement values, selection knobs or buttons to choose measurement and test probes.
What are they used for?
Multimeter are used to measure electrical properties of circuits. It measure Voltage, Resistance, Current and sometimes in some models you it can measure capacitance, temperature and frequency.
How to measure volage?
To measure voltage with a multimeter, first select the voltage function . Ensure the circuit is off, then insert the red lead into the voltage socket and the black lead into the common socket. Then connect the multimeter probes in parallel with the component you need to measure. Turn on the multimeter and read the display. Once done, turn off the multimeter and handle electrical components safely. But if you want to measure the battery’s voltage, connect the multimeter leads to the battery’s terminals (red probe to the battery’s positive terminal and black probe to the battery’s negative terminal)and Take the reading on the multimeter.
How to measure resistance?
To measure resistance with a multimeter, first select the resistance function . Ensure the circuit is off, then insert the red lead into the voltage socket and the black lead into the common socket. Then connect the multimeter probes in parallel with the component you need to measure its resistance. Turn on the multimeter and read the display. Once done, turn off the multimeter and handle electrical components safely. But if you want to measure the resistance of a resistor, connect the multimeter leads to the resistor’s terminalsand Take the reading on the multimeter which is in ohms(Ω).
How to measure current?
Turn off the circuit first to ensure safety. Set the multimeter to the correct current range, typically marked with ‘A’ for Amperes. Attach the red probe to the ‘A’ terminal and the black probe to the ‘COM’ terminal. Connect the probes in series with the circuit where you want to measure the current. Turn the circuit back and Read the value displayed on the screen. Before removing the probes, turn off the circuit for safety.
